caramelchameleon: a scowling angel with firey wings and an indistinct, glitchy face (recovery)

i cant believe dreamwidth will let me upload 50 images at a go and i can't believe i have the rank hubris to DO it, and then caption and transcribe all of them

when i first read CMWGE/GMD i got so jazzed about the characters and, like, had nobody to discuss them with yet.. and somehow that pressure spontaneously manifested in drawing short comics. i was just so ready to see these characters (de montreal) interact (with de montreal)

now completely transcribed with full commentary and with less botched HTML

click through for big size

i drew this whole thing in a single weekend of hyperfixation. it came out in fits and starts and wasn't plotted beforehand, and you can probably tell i was still learning how to draw the characters. i did it in black and white plus single highlight colors for each character; gold for jasper was obvious, and then purple for leonardo to compliment it. now i have a palette of colors assigned to every GMD pregen - it ended up being a good shorthand for who's who when there are variants and gender swaps and me occasionally adjusting even further from the canon designs.
for example: i drew leonardo here with his bangs pushed back because he'd shoved his goggles up into his hair and then.. kept drawing him basically the same even without the goggles, forever. r.i.p. his official hairstyle and its Gigantic Emo Bangs.
Panel 1. A dark room. Machinery. Some kind of eyeball creature is sitting on it. Panel 2. Leonardo de Montreal, goggles on, is hunched over and industriously welding something in the dark. Panel 3. The door opens a crack and light shines on Leonardo's hand. He flinches and whatever he was welding fizzles, sparks, and smokes ominously. From through the open door, Jasper Irinka calls, "Leonardo?"  Panel 1. Jasper leans into the room, the light from the open door cutting sharply into the darkness. Jasper: "Oh dear - am I interrupting?" Leonardo: "You most certainly are." Panel 2: Leonardo stands. The machinery he was welding is smoking gently. "However, my creation cannot be ruined more than it already has..." Panel 3: Leonardo pushes his goggles up into his hair. "...so I will resign myself to your company. What do you require?" Panel 4: Jasper, offscreen: "Oh, I just wanted to say hello!" Leonardo grimaces and rolls his eyes.  Panel 1. Jasper has two sunlight-tentacles out; they frequently extend beyond the panel borders. Leonardo is pulling off a pair of gloves as he approaches her. Jasper: "Why were you working in the dark?" Leonardo: "Put simply, my work is delicate and requires specific conditions." Panel 2. Leonardo exits the room and walks past her, glancing back. Leonardo: "Chiefly, a lack of sunlight, which I will thank you to remember in the future, before you enter my house, throw back the curtains, and fling open doors with abandon." Jasper looks penitent: "I'm sorry, I really had no idea." Panel 3. Leonardo waves his hand dismissively. "It doesn't matter now. Why are you in my house?" Panel 1: Jasper grins and leans closer. Leonardo is pinching the bridge of his nose. Jasper: "Well, it's a very nice day--" Leonardo: "This is my fault, I have spoken imprecisely." Panel 2: Jasper flops bodily onto a couch. Leonardo is leaning against the arm of it. Leonardo: "Why are you in my house, when I am quite certain my doors were locked." Jasper: "Oh! That." Leonardo: "I am agog. Will you have tea?" Jasper: "Please!" Splash panel of Jasper seated on the couch and surrounded by radiating lines of light. "Well, I picked the lock - which I promise I didn't really do on purpose, but, well, I did really WANT to, deep down, I guess." There is a series of four chibi-Jaspers inside the speech bubble; trying the door, finding it locked, and manifesting sun-tentacles which pick the lock for her. She continues: "Chuubo asked me to try and make today especially nice, you know, sunny, and I think it's working pretty well so far. It's too nice to sit inside in the dark, for sure." Leonardo, off panel: "That... is one opinion, certainly." Panel 1. Leonardo carries in a tea set with two mismatched cups. "So." Panel 2. Jasper watches him pour a cup of tea. Leonardo: "You have interrupted my work..." Panel 3. Leonardo sits on the arm of the couch, back mostly to Jasper. Jasper pours tea for herself, frowning slightly. Leonardo continues: "...because you have asked the sun to shine - something it usually manages quite well on its own. I fail to see why I should be involved at all, in fact." Panel 4. Leonardo twists to look at her, accusingly. "Is this a scheme to force me into Chuubo's company?" Jasper stares back without flinching and takes a sip of her steaming tea. "It can be."
Panel 1. Jasper holds up a finger to her chin thoughtfully. "He and Seizhi found a baby bird and Seizhi wants to take care of it - I'm sure they'd enjoy your help." Panel 2. Leonardo looks away. "Can you really picture me taking care of a baby anything?" Panel 3. Jasper covers her mouth to imperfectly hide a snicker. Leonardo looks unamused. "Ah, so you can. Don't." Panel 4. Jasper: "I just think it would do you good to get out in the sun -" Panel 5. Leonardo interrupts, chin raised and glaring down at her. "The sun? The Sun?" Splash page of Leonardo, looking intense. There is an anatomically heart-shaped black hole superimposed on his chest. In the opposite corner of the page is a stylized sun with the corresponding heart at its center. "The sun is a hideous wound in the sky. The sun is a personal mockery. It is a living monument and testimony to my greatest triumph, and it is a reminder of my deepest failures, because it is fueled by my science and my beating heart. It is a legacy the simpering fools of this town have never acknowledge, and I do not wish to walk beneath it and pretend at the niceness of the day." Panel 1. Leonardo, defensively hunched over, sips his tea and looks away. Jasper stares at him, distressed and speechless. Panel 2. Leonardo continues to avoid eye contact. "However, I will have to gather new materials, by night, before I may continue my latest work. So... in the meantime... I could perhaps take a brief stroll." Panel 3. Jasper leans in, beaming and excited. Jasper: "Really? You will?" Leonardo: "I won't enjoy it."
a few weeks later, a friend requested an epilogue, so i drew this:
Jasper and Leonardo seated on a swingset. Jasper is actually swinging; Leonardo is mostly just brooding. One of Jasper's tentacles is about to give him a push.

variant characters!
i like rinley yatskaya a lot but rinley titov is really really cool. default!rinley's leaf wreath has white strawberry blossoms; i drew rinley titov with some kind of black berries, instead.
dulcinea vii is leaps and bounds more interesting to me than, like, the heterozygous options on the character-option punnett square, if that makes ANY sense - leonardo vii and dulcinea de montreal, is what i mean. something about the intersection of human-passing* android + female just gets my attention better than the sum of its parts. it means i get to write a gynoid with a cool purpose and motivation who isnt a standard issue sexybot.
*of course, as you can see, i took "completely indistinguishable from human," nodded thoughtfully, and threw it totally out the window. i still draw her Like That to this day.
the story rinley tells is a real-world plains ojibwa story; i adapted it from the version told in "Giving Birth to Thunder, Sleeping with His Daughter," a compilation of Coyote stories by Barry Lopez. i intended to imply that rinley heard it from the fortitude rats, with a "wanderer" that was sort of ambiguously a rat but could also be a coyote.
Panel 1. Wide shot of Big Lake. Dulcinea is seated on a bench, staring out at the sunset; there are multicolored clouds of Outside-dust. Panel 2. Closer shot of Dulcinea's hands writing in a journal. Panel 3. Extreme closeup. The gears beneath Dulcinea VII's faceplate are visible. Panel 4. Dulcinea does not look up; deadpan: "Greetings, Rinley Titov." Rinley leans down out of the tree beside the bench. "Aw, what? I was SUPER quiet, though!" Panel 1. Rinley leans back, reclining on the tree branch. "Seriously, 'Nea, how'd you know I was up here?" Dulcinea keeps her head down and continues writing. "Extrapolation from previous data." Panel 2. Rinley swings down out of the tree. "Yeah, I figured it was probably one of those." Panel 3. Dulcinea shuts her book as Rinley leans over her shoulder curiously. Rinley: "What are you writing?" Panel 4. Dulcinea holds her journal to her chest. "I am recording my observations." Rinley shades their eyes and stares in the direction she's looking. "Of Big Lake?" Dulcinea: "No, of the dust as it blows in from Outside. I am hoping to establish evidence of a pattern." Panel 1. Rinley looks back at Dulcinea: "Woah. Are there patterns?" Dulcinea leans back and crosses one leg over the other. "That is what I am attempting to learn." Rinley: "Dad would say it's all just meaningless chaos and noise." Panel 2. Dulcinea: "It is my considered opinion that the head of the Titov family can and should be ignored whenever possible." Rinley: "Yeah, probably." Panel 3. Rinley crosses their arms and looks away and down."Ugh, he's not even my real dad." Dulcinea, off panel: "Noted."
Panel 1. Rinley circles behind Dulcinea to the far side of the bench: "Maybe the other shrines know something, though? You could -" Dulcinea looks unenthusiastic. "Unlikely." Panel 2. Rinley vaults over the back of the bench to take the unoccupied space. Dulcinea leans away to give them space. Rinley: "I'm just tryin' to help, 'Nea..." Panel 3. Rinley: "It's a pretty neat project, though. Stuff like this is what you're sorta MADE for, huh?" Dulcinea fidgets with her journal. "I was made... to continue the legacy of Dulcinea de Montreal." Panel 1. Inverted colors and embellishments of gears and machinery around Dulcinea's words: "I am an exquisite incarnation of scientific achievement, and I strive to uphold and refine my creator's methodology. She wrought me of brass and nightmares, and wound knowledge through my springs and gears did she. I who am made to carry on her work, now she can no more..." Panel 2. Dulcinea: "For more details, you may consult my user manual." Panel 3: Rinley, grinning: "Exactly, that's why you're so good at weird science and other smarty-pants stuff." Dulcinea: "Must you always phrase things so crudely." Rinley: "Yeah." Panel 4. Dulcinea rolls her eyes. "Please skip to the point of this question." Panels 5-6: Rinley looks down for a beat of silence, then up. "I just..."
Panel 1. Dulcinea: "...What abilities were you imbued with, at creation?" Panel 2. Rinely: "Uh, you mean... what kind of things I can do?" Panel 3. Rinley avoids eye contact. "I'm all right at hunting, I guess. Tracking and stuff. I'm always in control of whatever happens in dreams." Panel 4: Rinley shrugs. "But napping is no way to fulfill an epic destiny." Panel 5: "...That's what my brother says." Panel 6: Dulcinea: "You might be surprised by the power a dream can hold." Panel 1. Dulcinea: "Anything else?" Rinley scratches the back of their head. "I mean... I like stories. Hearing them, telling them..." Dulcinea: "Ah." Panel 2. Wide shot. Dulcinea: "Tell me a story." Rinley looks excited. "Oh, what, really? You wanna hear?" Dulcinea: "I'd like to verify a hypothesis." Panel 3. Rinley flops back onto the bench. "Haha, wow, okay! Here's one... Once, long ago..."
Simplified illustrations accompany Rinley's narration. "A wandering traveller followed a distant sound to the lakeshore and emerged into a crowd of dancers, all bending and swaying to the beat. And this wanderer didn't hesitate to join in, bragging all the while about being the best dancer they would ever see." Simplified illustrations accompany Rinley's narration. "They danced all day and the wanderer danced with them. And they danced all night, with the wanderer secretly hoping it would end soon all the while. Morning came at last. The wanderer looked around, and saw there had never been any dancers at all, only a field of cattails."
Panel 1. Rinley concludes their story. Dulcinea is looking thoughtfully into the distance. Panel 2. Rinley looks apprehensive. "... Are you gonna do a robot thing -" Panel 3. Rinley: "Where you're like... beep boop! Illogical! A catnip plant could not be mistaken for a living creature!" Rinley pulls a face and waves their arms stiffly to indicate 'robot.' Dulcinea, unimpressed: "What?" Panels 4 and 5. Dulcinea: "I am a highly advanced artificial intelligence, Rinley. I know an allegory when I hear one. My allegory-recognition circuit is 97% accurate." Panel 1. Rinley beams. "What! Are you joking, or is that a real thing?" Dulcinea leans in, smiling very slightly. "Of course it's real." Panel 2. Long shot of the sunset over the Lake. Dulcinea continues: "The motif-identifying oscillator is still in development, however." Rinley: "You're definitely messing with me!" Dulcinea: "I would never. Perhaps you could assist in its testing?" Rinley: "Yeah, I'd like that."

Technically unfinished but I probably won't revisit. Man, I can't believe I used to draw Chuubo's hair like that. I couldn't parse the Official Illustrations' hairstyle and wasn't sure how to draw the floof he deserved. I have a better handle on it these days.
Panels 1-3. Gradual fade in on Dulcinea VII, 'asleep,' plugged into a wall socket. Her machinery is ticking gently. Panel 4. A digital clock proclaims it 1:08 AM. A ray of sunlight falls across Dulcinea, bringing her awake in a hurry. Panel 1. Dulcinea sits up and unplugs herself; rays of sunlight are shining around the curtains. Panel 2. Dulcinea pulls the curtain aside and stares out, speechless. Panel 3: Dulcinea, still hastily pulling on a labcoat, rushes outside and shuts the door. The moon and stars are visible, but the incongrous sunlight overhead persists. From off panel, Seizhi shouts "Dulcinea!"
Panel 1. Dulcinea, accusingly: "Chuubo? What did you DO?" Chuubo looks sheepish; Seizhi leaps to his defense: "He didn't do ANYTHING!" Panel 2. Dulcinea grimaces and puts a hand to her forehead: "T-then what IS this, I - is that - Jade?" Chuubo: "Huh? No-" Panel 3. A golden congeries of flaming orbs and mouths and eyes against the night sky. Chuubo, below panel: "That's Jasper." Panel 1: Chuubo: "She isn't coming back! Please, can you help?" Panel 2: Dulcinea stares upward, speechless and distressed. Panel 3: She turns back to Chuubo: "Right. O.. of course you need help. What do you mean 'isn't coming back?' What's stopping her?" Chuubo: "Nothing!" Panel 4: Chuubo: "But she isn't listening to me, or even to Seizhi. She's upset over something... she just keeps getting bigger and farther away."
Panel 1. Seizhi: "If I could just get close enough - do you have an ornithopter? Something that flies?" Dulcinea: "Nothing here - only back in Old Molder -" Panel 2. Dulcinea flinches; a single pulse of a heartbeat-monitor line is visible behind her. "I -! Agh-" Panel 3. Seizhi and Chuubo look concerned. Dulcinea brushes her bangs out of her face. Seizhi: "What's wrong?" Dulcinea: "The heart, Dulcinea's, the original... it's in the sunlight - it's. It's nothing." Chuubo: "Are you okay...?" Dulcinea: "Yes, yes. Seizhi, I don't have anything ready that would help." Panel 1. Chuubo, determined and apprehensive: "T-that's okay! Seizhi, new plan - I'll daydream you a jetpack, and -" Panels 2 and 3. Dulcinea interrupts. "Wait - there is.. something I can do." Panel 4. Dulcinea pulls her labcoat open; the clockwork underneath is ticking gently. Panel 5: The exposed ribs on Dulcinea's chest are moving and creaking; something is visible behind them. The heartbeat-monitor pattern returns, increasing in intensity.
Panel 1. Dulcinea VII collapses backward. The ribcage pattern on her torso has opened up; light is pouring out. Chuubo shouts "DULCINEA!" Panel 2. Chuubo catches Dulcinea's limp body before she can fall. Seizhi is instead staring up at the shining thing that emerged from her. Panel 1. Chuubo stares down at Dulcinea VII, deactivated in his arms. "Huh. She's lighter than I'd have thought... is she... hollow?" Panel 2. Seizhi grabs his arm; both look up. Seizhi: "That's not really her, or - not quite?" Panel 3. An angel with wings of blood, fire, and feathers, radiance cutting through the darkness. Seizhi continues: "I think maybe it was always just... a shell."
Panel 1. Dulcinea, fully angelic, leans down to offer a hand to Seizhi. Seizhi reaches to take it, looking apprehensive: "Nea...?" Dulcinea's speech bubbles are ornate and elaborate. "I don't want to talk about it. Are you coming?" Seizhi: "Y-yes!" Panel 2. Dulcinea turns and starts flying upward, carrying Seizhi. Behind them, from the ground, Chuubo shouts "GOOD LUCK SEIZHI!" Dulcinea: "We'll probably need it." Panel 3. Seizhi: "I am not afraid of heights. I, Seizhi Schwan, am not afraid of heights..." Dulcinea: "Will you relax. I wouldn't go through all this trouble just to drop you. Nearly there."
i had been experimenting with angel designs at the time but this is pretty close to where i settled! the watsonian reason for the tears down her cheeks is that she never stopped weeping after jade's death; it's nothing to do with her emotional state necessarily, just a continuous and conspicuous gesture of morning. the doylist reason is that it's a parallel to the visible seams i draw on dulci VII's face.
there was meant to be more of this... various factors conspired against me. For one I didn't script everything out beforehand, and even by the time I got here I didn't really know for sure why Jasper was doing the thing, which makes it hard to write good dialogue. I knew broadly where I wanted to end up but couldn't get it to mesh along the way. second was just IRL business cutting into drawtime.

most of the connection bond perks in GMD are uneven but natalia to jasper is the only actual negative link. and... what if it was gay
Three panels of Natalia punching stuff. Panel 4. The punching bag swings back as Natalia glances behind her, startled. Jasper has interrupted her by saying, "Oh wow! Incredible!" Natalia: "Ah... Jasper." Panel 5. Natalia shakes numbness out of her hand. Jasper, four-armed, one of which is holding a water bottle, looks concerned: "Oh - I'm not interrupting, am I?" Natalia: "No, no. I am overdue for break." Jasper: "Oh, good." Panel 1. Jasper holds out a bottle of water, clasps two of the remaining hands together earnestly, and holds up her index finger on the fourth. "I've heard it's important for humans to stay hydrated -" Panel 2. Natalia accepts the water. Jasper continues: "I won't keep you long, I just wanted to bring you this. Wow, though, you looked amazing when I came in! You're so cool!" Natalia mumbles: "Ah. Yes. Thank you." Panel 3. Natalia chugs water, looking uncharacteristically flustered. Internal monologue: "I don't know how to deal with this at ALL." Other phrases float nebulously around her. "Cool? Amazing? Incredible? Am I those things?" "She's really cute" "Oh no" "This will end in pain."
then i drew more individual images of the ship, which i'm including. why not.
Natalia and Jasper are seated close together. Natalia is looking off into the distance but her hand is resting on one of Jasper's sun-tendrils. Natalia: "bby your hand is so warm" Jasper: "that me tentacle" Natalia Koutolika is doing one-handed pushups. Her other hand is occupied holding Jasper's hand; Jasper is sitting crosslegged in the middle of her back to provide extra weight, and smiling gayly. Natalia's expression is more stoic, but she's blushing nonetheless.
Natalia and Jasper in rainbow-themed pride parade outfits. Jasper is holding a rainbow flag and manifesting glittery rainbows behind herself, with one arm around Natalia's waist. Natalia is holding up a sign which reads "I LOVE MY GAY SUN"

another one that was pretty spontaneous - i drew angel!Leo and the Headmaster facing off, and then just kept going from there. is this how it went? who knows! nobody does! why'd i draw the headmaster so dang big you ask? sorry not accepting questions at this time
leo's yelling and hurling accusations about jade's death, if that's not clear.
Splash page. Leonardo's flaming sword falls to the ground and he looks down in blank horror as the Headmaster of the Bleak Academy's sword impales his chest. Panels 1 & 2. The Headmaster turns and walks away as Leonardo sinks to the ground, wings sagging. Panel 3. Leonardo struggles back to a kneeling position, hand clasped over the wound; the sword is no longer visible except as purple goop leaking around his fingers. His damaged halo is splitting and cracking into several pieces. "H... heh..." Panel 4. Leonardo raises his head and his sword, with a humorless grin; there is a purple tint in his eyes which matches the purple leaking from the wound in his chest. "Too... naive."
Panel 1. The Headmaster turns, looking faintly annoyed: "Ah... how persistent." Behind him, Leonardo is leaping toward him, bringing his sword up in a two-handed grip. Panel 2. The Headmaster dodges out of the way as the sword comes down, cape flowing. Leonardo: "I will NOT be stopped so easily! Murderer!" Headmaster: "You speak of things you do not understand, little angel." Panel 3. Leonardo: "I understand ENOUGH! I'll --" The Headmaster cuts him off with a one-handed grip around his neck, choking him. "How tedious." Panel 1. The Headmaster's POV. "How dull." Leonardo tugs at the Headmaster's grip on his neck ineffectually, groaning. The Headmaster's free hand probes at the bleeding, oozing wound in Leonardo's chest. "This, at least, is novel." Panel 2. Leonardo's speech balloons are dripping slightly with more purple goop. "U-unhand me - You - You'll never -" The Headmaster interrupts him, leaning in with a faint smile. "Enough, angel. I'll be generous." He cups Leonardo's head in his hands; Leonardo's wings and arms go rigid. The Headmaster continues: "Consider this... a gift."
Splash page. Leonardo is a crumpled heap on the ground, clutching convulsively at his head. A snarled mass of purple is visible in his head, and purple goop drips from his wings. His formerly-flaming sword is lying beside him, extinguished and faintly smoking. From off-panel, the Headmaster: "You will find no vengeance here. Go home."

jasmine is talking to the viewer here because this was prompted by viridiansunlight commenting "jasmine….. don’t do it" on another post
1. Jasmine Apocynum kisses Seizhi Schwan and reaches into their chest with her good left hand. 2. Seizhi begins to distort unpleasantly, hunched over and clutching at their face. Their torso is elongating, their face and legs appear to be melting, and spiky protrusions are pushing out of their body. Jasmine, heart in hand, turns toward the fourth wall, saying "Hmm? Sorry, what?" with a slightly preoccupied air.
1. Seizhi warps and distorts into something centipedelike with multiple faceless heads. An unsound effect indicates muffled screaming in the background. In Jasmine's hand, Seizhi's heart is giving off jiggly agitation lines. Jasmine rolls her non-eyes. "Alright, alright! Jeez! Fine!" 2. Jasmine unceremoniously shoves the heart back into Seizhi's flesh. They gasp for breath, reverting most of the way back from a centipede-monster in a hurry, although a few receding insect legs are still visible. 3. Seizhi adjusts their headband, glaring at Jasmine. "Hey, Jazz?" She replies pleasantly: "Mhmm?"
1. Seizhi inhales, puts their hands together, and invokes Touch The Heart, signified by a heartbeat monitor line extending out from them. 2. A vastly enlarged and exaggerated image of Seizhi leans over Jasmine, yelling, "DON'T DO THAT SHIT." Jasmine folds her arms, unimpressed. "It's like you people don't want enlightenment."
I drew kaiju-forms like the one Seizhi gets most of the way into for, like, half the GMD cast. I'll probably try and post them too. Seizhi's got bug traits here and elsewhere in my art because Actuals are compared to big twitching alien insects a lot. I know it's not literal but you can't stop me.

just a quick one, this was prompted by [personal profile] faeline, who proposed that chuubo's peacefulness aura might be able to mitigate leonardo's nightmares, and if so, that chuubo would treat such a thing as a Fun Sleepover and leo would hate it
Panel 1. Chuubo, a sleeping bag under one arm, knocks. Panel 2. Leonardo answers the door, looking resigned. Seizhi is there also. Chuubo waves. "Hi Leo! Ready for our sleepover?" Leonardo: "That is absolutely not what this is." Panel 2. Leonardo, from off panel: "You brought Seizhi." Chuubo puts an arm around Seizhi, who waves timidly. Chuubo: "Of course!" Seizhi: "Um, hi." Leonardo: "Seizhi, this has nothing to do with you." Seizhi: "Yeah, I already told my parents I'd be here, so -" Panel 4. Leonardo rolls his eyes. "Right, yes. Parents."
Leonardo: "This is a nightmare." Chuubo leans in and points to himself with a smile. "Not if I can help it!" Seizhi folds their arms, looking more deadpan. "Is that not, like, the entire point."

using miracles to eat things that really shouldnt be eaten deals critical damage and this particular line in the Primordial redux examples had me reeling
The Headmaster of the Bleak Academy shows off the bow that killed the sun to Jasper Irinka, who is visibly less than pleased. Jasper lunges forward and grabs the Headmaster's bow. He looks mildly startled. Jasper makes eye contact and crams the Headmaster's bow into her mouth, with over the top sound effects - "HOMF CRONCH MUNCH SNAP CHOMP CRUNCH." The Headmaster steeples his fingers and looks appropriately intimidated.

Basically just one-for-one illustration of the proposed climax of Horizon-campaign Called Away Rinley's third quest, as posted on Dr. Moran's tumblr. I had to look up what 'samite' is.
Rinley - "Rinley"? clad in samite and sealed in grey crystal.
Rinley looks up apprehensively, then reaches as if to touch their crystalized double. The dialogue reads "Ah. There I am."
